Eva’s illness causes her legs to ache, but thanks to her friends, her heart remains light. When she has doubts, Mila is there. When she’s afraid, together they turn difficult days into fond memories. Eva then realizes something very important: we don’t always heal on our own, but with friendship, we grow stronger, and every step—even a slow one—becomes a courageous step. While friendship doesn’t make the illness go away, it takes away much of her loneliness and reminds her that, even when we’re fragile, we’re never alone as we move forward.
Blount’s disease is a rare condition that affects leg growth in some children. It is not limited to a simple curvature of the tibia(e); rather, it is a growth disorder affecting the inner part of the tibia. More than just a visible deformity, Blount’s disease is a disorder of the growth plate in the tibia. This condition can develop early and requires close medical monitoring to help the child grow properly. Depending on the case, treatments such as wearing splints or surgical procedures may be recommended (bone graft, external fixator). Despite the challenges, with appropriate support and a lot of courage, children with this condition can continue to play, learn, and thrive, surrounded by their family and friends.
Through the story of Eva and her courageous steps, a wonderful journey began. Moved by her daughter’s experience with Blount’s disease, Stéphanie Robert founded the first French Association for Blount’s Disease (AFMB), which is now recognized as a public-interest organization, a member of the Rare Diseases Alliance, and listed on Orphanet. Blount’s disease, which remains little known, often leads to a medical odyssey for children and their families, with delayed diagnoses and difficult treatment journeys. The association works to inform, raise awareness, and promote the implementation of clear protocols to improve screening and care, ensuring that no child is left without answers. It also provides support and guidance to families going through these difficult times.
