This microbiome that makes us obese

The prevalence of obesity has dramatically increased over the past decades: more than 44% of the population is overweighted and more than 300 million individuals are affected by morbid adiposity. What is causing this tragedy? Human lifestyle may be the beginning of an answer…

Dr. Christoph A. Thaiss, a young promising scientists, was awarded the “Grand Prize Translational Medicine”. During his PhD at the Weizmann Institute, he highlighted temporal and spatial microbiome dynamics in obese people, which is strongly linked to our modern lifestyle. Indeed, he showed that the disruption of host circadian rhythmicity alters microbial ecosystem and predispose to obesity and glucose intolerance. He also detailed the mechanisms of weight regain after weight loss, the so called “Yo-yo effect”.
