An engineered bacteria to prevent brain damages due to hyperammonemia

Hyperammonemia, or excess blood ammonia, can result in brain damage and death.

Caroline B. Kurtz and collaborators reported on January 16th in Science translational Medicine that an engineered Escherichia coli, by overproducing Arginine from ammonia, is enable to lower ammonemia and prevent brain damages. In healthy human volunteers, the bacterium was metabolically active and no serious adverse events were observed.
